As Jean-Luc Bordeaux notes, Le Moyne portrays the Virgin with an air of amusement as she is about to `lightly chastise her son' in the prime version of this composition in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersberg (loc. cit.). The scholar further observes that the artist drew inspiration from Bolognese painters along with Correggio and Barrocci, particularly in the soft modelling of the Virgin's face and the soft tonality of the blues and reds, placing the conception and execution of the painting in the mid-1720s.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported with a glue lining and has a relatively new wooden stretcher. The paint is stable on the support. Under natural light, the varnish is clear. A fine craquelure is visible in places. Slight scuffing is visible along the left and right edges due to frame contact. Under ultraviolet light, the craquelure over parts of the Virgin's right eye and the proper lower left side of her face and neck fluoresce. Scattered touches fluoresce in the background. A few strokes fluoresce on Christ's forehead, sternum and left shoulder, as well as on the Virgin's right hand and sleeve. The painting reads nicely and may be displayed as is.
