The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is composed of a single board measuring approximately 1/4 inch thick with horizontal wood grain and beveling along all four sides of the reverse. The varnish has gone matte and surface grime obscures a full reading of the painting. Abrasion due to frame rubbing is visible along all edges. Several small, old losses, the largest of which measures approximately 1/2 x 1/8 inch, are visible along the right edge in natural light. A further line of lifting paint measuring approximately 3/4 inch is seen along the lower center edge. Numerous fine, horizontal lines have developed due to the natural aging of paint along the wood grain, particularly in the upper 2/3 of the composition. Ultraviolet light suggests the panel has been selectively cleaned in its history, with old varnish fluorescing unevenly over the structures and some of the figures at left. Several passages of old restoration fluoresce under UV light, including to the very top front of the tower, a further passage in the rear of the white horse which extends into the low masonry wall and finer lines of retouching to reinforce the contours of the front of the sleigh immediately to the horse's right. Further fine lines of strengthening to reinforce the contours of the kneeling skaters in the foreground also fluoresce. The painting would likely respond well to a cleaning and sensitive conservation treatment.
