The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been executed on a copper plate, which remains stable and shows no signs of warping.
Examination in natural light shows some thinning to the upper paint glazes, notably in the still life details. There has been some loss of the gilt paint to the trompe l'oeil frame. The painting has been selectively cleaned, for instance over the dragon in the background at centre right. The original signature at upper left has been painted over and the van Mieris signature added at lower left. There is evidence of some scattered retouching.
Examination under UV light confirms these observations.
The details of the central figure can still be well appreciated.
