The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The uncradled panel measures approximately ½ inch thick and exhibits beveling on all four sides. The paint is stable on the support and exhibits a fine vertical craquelure in Pomona’s bare skin. The varnish is yellowed and slightly cloudy. Light scuffing due to frame abrasion is visible along all four edges. In natural light there is a pinhead size loss in Vertumnus’ cloak at lower left. Ultraviolet light does not easily penetrate the varnish layer, but a handful of isolated pinhead size touches of strengthening fluoresce in Pomona’s neck and chest. A further touch of strengthening measuring approximately ½ x 1/8 inch extending from Pomona’s dress into the foreground rock ledge is visible in natural light but does not fluoresce under ultraviolet light. The painting can be displayed in its current state but would likely benefit if the varnish were refreshed.
