Lot Essay

This portrait print of the Cardinal and Archbishop of Mainz is one of the few instances in Dürer's printed oeuvre which give us an indication of the numbers of impressions printed and the price paid. In 1520, he sent two hundred impressions and the copper plate to the Cardinal, and received 200 Gold Guilders and a quantity of fine cloth in payment. We can assume that he printed a certain number of impressions before giving the plate away, and further impressions were pulled for the book edition, to be included in the Heiligtumbuch der Stiftskirche zu St. Moritz und M. Magdalena (Halle, 1520), although the book is very rare and the edition must have been small.
