This is one of five chiaroscuro woodcuts of devotional subjects, published in 1591, which sprang from the collaboration between the printer Andrea Andreani and the painter Alessandro Casolani, during Andreani's Sienese period.
Andreani was a remarkable printmaker as well as a talented self-promoter. Always on the look-out for promising artistic collaborations, influencial acquaintances and wealthy patrons, together with Casolani he joined the Compagnia di Santa Caterina in Siena, a confraternity which included artists as well as local patricians - among them Fabio Buonsignori, to whom this print is dedicated. For another print from this series - albeit lacking the dedication - see lot 80 of this sale.
