Lot Essay

According to the catalogue entries of the British Museum (inv. no. 1838,0526.4.24) and the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. no. 1922.1381.5, respectively), the present print is an impression of the second state, with the cross added to the wayside shrine. The example illustrated and described as second state by Bromberg (pp. 146-149), appears to be an unrecorded intermerdiate impression between first and second state, with some additional shading but before the addition of the cross.
