Lot Essay

The attribution of this print to Marie de Médicis is based on a notation found on another impression of this rare woodcut, now in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. According to Fournier's Dissertation on the Art of Engraving on Wood the said impression once resided in the French Royal Collection, and the annotation is supposedly a transcription of the note written on the reverse of the original woodblock matrix. According to the note, the block was gifted to Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674), then a student painter, while he was undertaking a portrait of the Queen. "Le Vendredi 22 de Fevrier 1629, la reine mère, Marie de Medicis, m'a trouvé digne de ce rare present, faite de sa propre main (On Friday 22 February 1629, the queen mother, Marie de Medicis, thought me worthy of this rare present, engraved by her own hand)."

The age of the queen in the depiction is debated, with suggestions ranging from the age of nine to the age of eighteen based on the fashion for the Roman style of dress; however the incised date of MDLXXXVII would suggest that this is a representation of the Queen, or that this was executed by the Queen, when she was 14 years old.

This impression compares well with the Cracherode impression in the British Museum.
