Fragonard's drawing of this subject, in the same direction, is at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Lyon (inv. no. 429). Fragonard visited Pompeii on 6 May 1774 and the incident of their party finding a skeleton in the basement of a building is described in some detail in Bergeret's Journal Inédit D'un Voyage En Italie, 1773-1774. (See Rosenberg, p. 394).
