Lot Essay

The present engraving is after a rejected design for the fresco cycle in the Oratory of S. Giovanni Decollato, Rome, by the Florentine mannerist painter Jacopino del Conte (formerly attributed by Bartsch to Jacopo Pontormo). The cycle was eventually designed and executed by a more famous Florentine painter, Francesco Salviati.
