This half-length Ecce Homo by the Vicentino painter and woodcutter Giuseppe Scolari can be dated to the final years of the 16th or the earliest years of the 17th century. In composition and style it is one of Scolari's most vigorous and expressive prints. Its bold graphic style, reminiscent of early Venetian woodcuts, has led some scholars to attribute its design to Titian and the execution to Domenico delle Greche. However, the combination of black-line and white-line woodcut is typical of Scolari's manner and can also be observed his other, better-known works, such as 'Saint George and the Dragon'.
A reverse copy of the present composition, rougher in style and execution, is more common than the present original. To our knowledge, only one other - considerably cropped - impression of Scolari's own version has been offered at auction within the last thirty years. We could trace two impressions in major public collections (Collezione Remondini, Musei Civici Bassano del Grappa, inv. no. 0500212028; and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, acc. no. 62.718).
