The highly-finished preparatory drawing by Goltzius, of very similar size, from the collection of the Earls of Northwick and other private collections of the 20th century, was sold by Christie's, Amsterdam, in 1984. It is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (inv. no. 84.GG.810.1).

In addition to the catalogue description: - trimmed inside the platemark but retaining a fillet of blank paper outside the borderline at left and above, trimmed to or fractionally inside the subject at right. - trimmed slightly irregularly just below the text at the bottom. - a small paper loss, measuring circa 22 x 10 mm., at upper left, repaired and made-up with pen and ink (old repair). - a short repaired tear with tiny, associated losses at the upper right corner (old repair). - the sheet toned. - some very minor staining, surface dirt and a few pale pinpoint foxmarks. - two tiny un-inked spots at lower left, near Vulcan's feet. - with the usual horizontal central fold, flattened and mostly visible verso. Otherwise as described.
