Lot Essay

The Annunciation is arguably the most beautiful of the six large engravings of this series, also known as The Life of the Virgin or The Masterpieces. Goltzius dedicated the series to Duke William V of Bavaria (1548-1626), later known as William the Pious, in the tablet at the lower left of this print. William V was a great supporter and patron of mannerist art in Bavaria.
