Lot Essay

The painter, etcher and miniaturist Hans Bol (1534-1593) belonged to the generation of Netherlandish artists before Goltzius. In this posthumous portrait with its elaborate allegorical frame design, created in the year of his death, Goltzius pays tribute to the venerated older master. The two putti on the top as well as the painting tools and measuring devices at the sides characterise Bol as an artist as well as a scientist, engaged in examining the visible world.
