Lot Essay

This print is closely related to the painting of the same subject by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino (1591-1666). The painting is today in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin, Italy. Another version is in the Galleria Doria-Pamphilj in Rome.
The Inventaire du Fonds Français records an impression of Dagoty's mezzotint printed in black only, signed in the plate Luigi D'agoty, and a coloured version, presumably of the present second state, at the Bibliothèque Jacques Doucet, Paris.
