Lot Essay

By the time Andrea Andreani obtained the woodblock by Vicentino, the origin of the design appears to have been forgotten. Andreani attributed the composition to Giuseppe Salviati, when in fact Vicentino had based his woodcut on a drawing by Parmigianino, now held at the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, Hanover (N. H.).
