NICOLAES LAUWERS (1600-1652) AFTER PETER PAUL RUBENS (1577-1640)
Of the several versions painted by Rubens and his workshops, the present engraving is most closely related to two paintings of this subject: one in private hands, the other in the collection of the Hermitage State Museums in Saint Petersburg (inv. no. ГЭ-517).
Another first state impression of the engraving, in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, appears to be retouched by Rubens himself, presumably to instruct the engraver Schelte Adams Bolswert, who reworked the plate for a second state and edition.
