Lot Essay

The watermark Griffin (or Lion) has been listed by Hinterding, in New Hollstein's entry, as one of those found in the second state (before the later rework). The present is an impression of the third state, with retouches by a different hand - mostly in the transition of the shaded area into the blank strip at the upper left, clearly delineated by a sharp line and cross-hatching. This might be an indication of a short time span between the second state and the retouching of the plate.
