Lot Essay

Weyer was one of the first Nuremberg artists to adopt the Dutch Mannerism of artists such as Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) and Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651), whose works he would most likely have known from prints. In 1613, he was selected as one of the artists to redecorate the great hall of the Nuremberg Rathaus, fragments of which remain in the collection of the Museen der Stadt Nürnberg. His success with this project was indubitably the reason for his selection as city painter in 1615, a post he held until his death.
