Lot Essay

The lively opportunities that a kermesse offered to an artist were obviously appreciated by ten Cate, as attested by his numerous drawings of the subject. A particularly closely related drawing, both in subject and execution, signed and dated 1840 is in the Rijksmuseum (inv. no. RP-T-1921-169). However, this version reverses the composition of the present one, with the inn appearing on the left, and includes a commedia dell'arte style performance to the right. The present drawing was originally part of an album put together by Florentine Jacobine Martine Ontijd and Jonkheer Cornelis Anthony Rethaan Macaré between 1840 and 1860, which mostly included work by contemporary artists.
