Lot Essay
Looking west from a standpoint on the frozen IJ, Hendrik Keun's lively winter scene has as its backdrop Amsterdam's Nieuwe Stadsherberg, the new city inn, built in 1662. Originally intended to house travellers to the city who arrived after the ports had shut for the night, it later became popular for the wonderful views it afforded visitors down the IJ. The inn was demolished in 1876 to make way for the Central Station. The Haringpakkerstoren, aptly named for its position in the city's busy herring packing district, was one of the medieval fortress towers to stand along the city walls. In 1607 it was further ornamented with the spire seen in Keun's drawing, possibly by the architect Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621). Similarly to the Nieuwe Stadsherberg, the tower was taken down in 1829, but Keun's drawing stands as testament to the attractive prospect of these former landmarks.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Executed on laid paper, hinge mounted with two strips of tape to the upper edge of the verso. The paper is in overall good condition and the media remain clear and strong. The paper has slightly discoloured. There is some staining to the sheet, specially the upper left-hand corner, and some tiny spots of scattered foxing. There is evidence on the verso that the sheet used to be laid down along the left edge.
