The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel is composed of two vertically oriented boards. The left panel measures 7 inches wide, the right panel measures 10 inches wide. The boards are slightly warped. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There is evidence of wood worm, now inactive. There is an overall network of craquelure following the grain of the wood. Under natural light, scattered retouchings are evident, including to the man’s armor at lower center, his hair and to the dark background to the immediate left of his proper right eye. There are feathered strokes of inpainting to minimize the appearance of craquelure. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations. The painting can be hung in its present state. The work is offered without a frame.
