AFTER FRANCIS COTES
Portrait of Mrs. Francis Cotes, neé Sarah Adderly, bust-length, with her dog
The present painting is an early copy after a pastel of Cotes' wife that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1770 (see E.M. Johnson, Francis Cotes, Oxford, 1976, p. 164, no. 36.).

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is supported on the reverse with a glue lining. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has discolored slightly with age. There is and overall network of craquelure, along which are tiny, pinpoint losses. Under natural light, small areas of retouching to the dark background, the flesh tones of her proper left cheek and earring, and along the lower edge are evident. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations and further feathered strokes of inpainting to minimize craquelure in some areas. The painting can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in a carved giltwood frame.
