The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported on the reverse by a glue lining and is stable, although slightly slack, on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable and dirty under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There is a fine craquelure across the surface. Scattered small areas of pigment loss, especially along the extreme edges, are evident. A few horizontal lines of scratches are visible at center. There is an approximately 8 inch long diagonal fine scratch at the upper left corner. In natural light, restoration to address earlier frame abrasion and minor distrubances along the stretcher bar are visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light, confirms the aforementioned restorations, as well as scattered unobtrusive touches of restoration throughout. The painting can be hung in its current state but its appearance would be dramatically enhanced following a cleaning and restoration. The work is offered in a carved giltwood frame.
