Lot Essay

Bartolomeo Ligozzi was the nephew of the Mannerist painter Jacopo Ligozzi. Born in Verona, the artist achieved success in Florence, where he was favored by the Medici court. Indeed, the parrot in the present painting also features in a painting by Bartolomeo dated 1688 for the Grand Duchess Vittoria della Rovere, who installed it in the apartments of her son, Cardinal Francesco Maria de’ Medici (Villa medicea, Museo della natura morta, Poggio a Caiano).

We are grateful to John T. Spike for proposing the attribution on the basis of photographs and for his kind assistance cataloguing this lot.
