The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This head study is executed on a sheet of laid paper that has pen and ink manuscript writing on it. The painted sheet has been laid onto a card support. The upper left corner was has been repaired, as seen in the catalogue image. There are a few small losses and tears in the sheet at the extreme edges, as seen in the catalogue image. There appear to be a few repaired and retouched tears in the figure's forehead. The sheet is not entirely flat, but is stable. There are scattered worm holes throughout. The paint layer is stable under an uneven varnish. Inspection under ultraviolet light was hindered by the opaque varnish. The painted sketch presents well and is offered without a frame.
