Lot Essay

Despite its evident quality, this fluently rendered study of a bearded man has thus far defied definitive attribution. The sketch, which once bore an attribution to Sir Peter Paul Rubens but is probably by a Bolognese hand, is executed on a manuscript leaf which appears to contain a list of pigments and prices written in Italian.
