The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This panel is comprised of two boards with a horizontal grain measuring approximately 1/8 inch thick. The panel join is visible on the reverse and on the painted surface. There is a small repaired drill hole at upper center. A small crack at upper left measures 1 inch in length. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish that has bloomed in some areas. In natural light restorations along the panel join are visible as well as a small restoration over the Virgin's ear. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations to the panel join and reveals a campaign of pinpont restorations in the flesh tones. Broad areas of the dark background fluoresce as well as shadows in the drapery folds. The contours of the design of the decorative cloth in the foreground have been strengthened. The painting presents well and can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in a wood frame with a velvet and gilt wood insert.
