The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas is supported on the reverse with a glue lining. The paint layer is stable and slightly dirty under a varnish that has yellowed slightly with age. There is a small abrasion to the upper edge at center with associated pigment loss. An additional area of pigment loss is evident along the lower edge at right, likely from frame abrasion. There is a network of craquelure across the surface, especially visible in the flesh tones. Under natural light, lines of retouching to address frame abrasion along the edges and to repair a loss in the flesh tones underneath the Virgin's nose are evident. Inspection under ultraviolet light is largely impeded by an opaque varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in a simple gilt wood frame.
