The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been laid down to a panel support, presumably at a later date. The panel is warping slightly. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There is scattered pigment loss, primarily to the lower left corner. Under natural light, retouching to the edges to address frame abrasion is evident. A vertical line of retouching to the center of the canvas, an area to the sky at upper left and to the figure in the lower right corner is visible. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations and further scattered retouching. The painting presents well and can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
