The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The First:
The painting is supported on the reverse by a glue lining and is stable on its support. The paint layer is slightly dirty under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There is a wide, uneven craquelure across the surface. Along the upper edge and down the center there is increased cracking caused by the stretcher. Restorations to this cracking are visible in natural light and in the catalogue image. There is a round, repaired hole in the sky at upper left, measuring 3 inches in diameter. There is a restored tear in the sky at center measuring 7 inches, as seen in the catalogue image. Further restorations in the sky have discolored slightly with age and are visible in natural light. Restorations to pinpoint losses along the craquelure are visible throughout. There are restorations along the extreme edges, but these are hidden by the rabbet of the frame. The painting presents well and can be hung as is, but its appearance could be improved by cleaning the surface dirt and addressing the discolored restorations. The work is offered in a gilt wood frame.
The Second:
The painting is supported on the reverse by a glue lining and is stable on its support. The paint layer is slightly dirty and exhibits a fine and uneven craquelure. A horizontal band of cracking and resotration along the upper edge corresponds to the stretcher on the reverse. Restorations to abraided areas in the sky are visible in natural light and have discolored slightly with age. There is a small, restored hole at upper left measuring 3/4 inch in diameter and a restored vertical tear measuring 1 inch, both repairs are visible in natural light. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed scattered strokes of stregthening reinforcing the contours of the architecture throughout. The painting can be hung in its present state but its appearance could be improved by cleaning the surface dirt and addressing the discolored restorations. The work is offered in a gilt wood frame.
