Lot Essay

While the first painting does not driectly correspond to any known work by Giovanni Paolo Panini, the second is a same scale copy a work now in the Collection D'Ariggo, in Nizza. The present painting does not match any of the traced copies listed in the catalogue raisonné (see F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma dell '700, Rome, 1986, pg. 444, no. 431).
