The painting is reinforced on the reverse with a wax lining. The paint layer is stable and under a clear varnish that has slightly yellowed with age. Under natural light, lines of retouching to address frame abrasion and further campaigns of restoration are visible. There are a few areas of retouching at the upper right quadrant, including a C-shaped restoration, a horizontal repair approximately 4 inches long below it and a short vertical restoration near the right edge. There is a small area of retouching at upper center above the sitter's head. A network of restoration to the lower left quadrant near his hip, approximately 12 inches long and 9 inches wide is also evident. Further scattered areas of restoration are visible throughout, as are feathered strokes of inpainting to minimize the appearance of the craquelure. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations. The painting can be hung in its present state. The work is offered in a carved and painted wood frame.
