The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas is unlined and maintains its original tacking edges. The canvas is secure on its stretcher. A small patch is visible on the reverse and corresponds to a repair over the sitter's proper right knee. A restored vertical tear measuring 4 1/2 inches in the background at upper left is also evident. An indentation mark is visible along the extreme edges and matches the struts of the support. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish. A fine craquelure, that follows the weft and weave of the canvas, is visible. Pinpoint losses along the craquelure are visible in natural light, as well as a few associated repairs in the flesh tones and jacket. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals additional repairs scattered in the dark background and strengthening to the contours of the sitter's jacket and hair. The painting presents well and can be hung in its present state. It is offered in a plain dark wood frame.
