The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is supported on the reverse by a glue lining. The paint layer is stable, if slightly dirty under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There are scattered small areas of pigment loss and an overall network of craquelure. Under natural light, retouching to address frame abrasion along the extreme edges is evident. There are scattered touch-ups throughout, including to the boy's chin and to his coat at the lower left to address a loss, as well as to the upper right quadrantof the painting. Inspection under ultraviolet light was largely hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting can be hung in its present state and is offered in a simple gilt wood frame.
