The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is supported by a glue lining and is stable on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable with a wide craquelure across the surface. The varnish has yellowed slightly with age. In natural light a repair to the column at upper center is visible. In addition to the aforementioned repair inspection under ultraviolet light revealed two further repairs. The first is an approximately 2 inch long area over the ear and neck of the figure holding the tablet at right and the second is a 4 ¼ inch long curved line of retouching in Saint Catherine’s outstretched arm and chest. These repairs are also visible under close inspection in raking light. The painting should be displayed in its current condition and is offered in a giltwood and painted frame.
