The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. The varnish is clear, if slightly uneven and yellowed, and the paint stable on the support. A fine craquelure is visible in natural light. Ultraviolet light reveals restoration to an old hole just to the right of the putto at upper right, which is accompanied by a patch on the reverse. Several further restored punctures or small tears also fluoresce, particularly in the background and one of the faces of the boys at upper left and the chest of the standing boy. Further scattered passages of retouching fluoresce in the figures and background, generally to reinforce the contours of details like the drapery of the standing boy or address losses and damage along the front of the feigned niche and along the bottom edge. The painting presents well and can be displayed in its current state or treated, according to taste.
