The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is supported on the reverse by a glue lining and is firmly adhered to its stretcher. The paint layer is clean and stable, with a fine craquleure acrossed the surface. The varnish saturates the colors nicely. Some areas of impasto have flattened during the relining process. In raking light feathered strokes of restoration are visble in the white sheets of paper. There also appears to be restorations following a crease caused by the stretcher along the extreme edges. Restouchings help to define an area of abraison at the lower right over the corner of the table cloth. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a 1 inch long vertical tear in the center of the table cloth below the corner of the book. Further touches of restoration in the dark background and scattered throught were also visible under ultraviolet light. The painting presents well and can be hung in its current condition. The painting is offered in a dark wood Dutch style frame.
