Lot Essay

This painting, which recounts the story of Venus and Adonis as described by Ovid (Metamorphoses, X: 710-739), is the only known mythological subject in Camphuysen's oeuvre. A similar treatment of the windswept landscape can be found in several other works by the artist, including his Landscape with broken trees in the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed, Amersfoort (inv. no. NK 2456).
