The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is relined and stable on its support. The paint layer is stable, although dirty under a varnish that has yellowed with age. There is an area of disturbance to the background at the sitter's right. There is an uneven network of craquelure, most notable to the sky at upper right. Under natural light, scattered areas of retouching, including to a small circular area at the lower left edge, are evident. Lines of stregthening to the sitter's jacket, the horse, and to the trees and figures in the background are visible. There is a repaired tear beginning near the upper edge at right and extending down toward the horse's forehead. Inspection under ultraviolet light, confirms the aforementioned repairs, although further inspection is impeded by an opaque varnish. The work would benefit from a sensitive cleaning, but can be hung in its present state. The painting is offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
