GERMAN, 17TH CENTURY, PROBABLY ORIGINALLY THE BASE AND UPPER SECTION OF A CLOCK OR SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

Articulated decoration including incised night and day on the globe. Oxidation evident in the crevices of the figure and around the inlaid decoration on the base. Oxidation and a later screw on top of the globe. Rubbing at the high points including the top of the globe. Spot of lost gilding on the stomach of the figure with the metal support showing through. Two cut holes at the base of the upper section. Disguised compartment at 4 1/2 inches from the ground accessible by lifting the upper portion. Holes on panels on upper portion of the base probably for elements now absent. One ball foot and one pin head on the base absent. Ball feet possibly later additions. A plugged lead hole to lower section of the base under a mermaid with a mirror.
