The present painting is a studio variant of a signed family portrait, today in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art (inv. 44.103; see Wieseman, op. cit., no. 59). A compositional study for the three figures at left is in the Louvre, Paris. The group at left also appears in a painting, also dated 1667, by Netscher's pupil Aleijda Wolfsen (Sotheby's, London, 7 April 1982, lot 67). An attribution to Wolfsen may be entertained, though the painting's quality appears higher than her usual production.

The painting executed on canvas, which is relined and is stable on its support. The paint layer is stable and under a clear varnish that has yellowed slightly with age. There is an overall network of fine craquelure and with some disturbances, including one that extends from the sculpture in the background to the top of the mother's head. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms scattered areas of retouching, but inspection is largely impeded by an opaque varnish. The work should be hung in its present state. The painting is offered in a wooden Dutch style frame.
