This painting belongs to a very small group of surviving small-scale oil sketches by Theodoor van Loon. A highly comparable sketch on paper depicting is in a private collection, while two further examples on canvas are today in the Museé du Louvre, Paris, and a private collection (see S. van Sprang, ed., , exhibition catalogue, Paris and Luxembourg, 2018-19, nos. 35, 41 and 43).
