Lot Essay
Mainwaring became Secretary of State to Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford following the latter’s appointment as Lord Deputy General of Ireland in 1632. Van Dyck's original version, based on Titian's double portrait of ‘Georges d’Armagnac, Bishop of Rodez, with his Secretary Guillaume Philandrier’, was formerly at Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire (O. Millar, in S.J. Barnes, et. al., Van Dyck: A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven and London, 2004, p. 600, no. IV.218). The impressive composition was very popular and a number of versions are known.
