Lot Essay

Suggestion has been made that this portrait bears a stylistic affinity to works by the Master of the Princely Portraits and could have been executed by a later artist influenced by the master. The sitter’s physiognomy is also comparable to the Portrait of Engelbert II, Count of Nassau in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and in a portrait of him found in the Triptych with the miracles of Christ in The National Gallery of Victoria, attributed to the Workshop of Master of the Legend of St Catherine.
