Consuelo Montagu, Duchess of Manchester (1853-1909), Catalogue of the Pictures at Kimbolton Castle, p. 13, no. 98, as ‘Holbein’, in the Green Drawing Room.

Exhibited

London, The New Gallery, Exhibition of the Royal House of Tudor, 1890, no. 130, as 'School of Holbein'.

Suggestion has been made that this portrait bears a stylistic affinity to works by the Master of the Princely Portraits and could have been executed by a later artist influenced by the master. The sitter’s physiognomy is also comparable to the Portrait of Engelbert II, Count of Nassau in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam and in a portrait of him found in the Triptych with the miracles of Christ in The National Gallery of Victoria, attributed to the Workshop of Master of the Legend of St Catherine.
