The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The panel has been planed and cradled to the reverse, and is providing a flat, stable support for the picture. There is a very fine pattern of craquelure to the surface and an aged discoloured varnish, with some old spots of retouching visible in natural light. The picture presents well overall, with the integrity of the drawing and the delicate glazes of the face and hair well preserved. Some underdrawing can be seen around the nose and eyes, and there would appear to be a pentiment above Christ’s head, suggesting its position was lowered. The examination under UV reveals some scattered spots of more recent retouching, notably to his left hand and forehead, and suggest some older restoration under the varnish. There is a very small historic vertical crack upper centre, with associated retouching. The blue drapery would seem to have been quite extensively restored. A sensitive restoration could bring enhanced clarity and definition to the picture.
