The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This single-piece oak panel has a large irregular crack running through the centre of the painting, as visible in the illustration. The crack is held stable by a cradle of vertical panels on the reverse. There are further small cracks running horizontally in the centre in both the left and right centres, which have been restored and are held stable. In raking light, the artist has painted in thick strokes, with the paint layer covered in an old yellowing varnish. The artist's painterly technique remains highly appreciable. Ultraviolet examination reveals a thick obscuring varnish, which makes proper assessment of the panel difficult. Faint restoration is visible along the central crack and some scattered restoration in some of the darker shadows of the figures in the lower left, along with historic restoration to the sky and to some figures in the ground.
