Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The oak panel is cradled to the reverse, and provides a stable support for the picture. There is a very slight unevenness in the panel surface, perhaps indicative of some bowing in the past. The picture presents well overall, with much of the detail of the drawing and delicate brushwork finely preserved. There is an aged, discoloured varnish, and on close inspection some very faint historic splits can be seen (on the right edge and lower centre for example), together with old scattered retouching, notably on the left hand side, mostly associated with the vertical panel grain. The examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouching.
