The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This two-piece oak panel is held under tension by a cradle and remains stable. The artist has painted in thin glazes, with evidence of natural ageing evident in the increased transparency of the thinnest tints. In raking light, restoration to the panel join is visible along with retouching in the darkest brown glazes, applied to reduce the appearance of isolated abrasion. The modelling of the figures remains highly appreciable. Ultraviolet examination reveals a thick layer of obscuring varnish, with retouching in the upper torso of the male figure, scattered retouching in the still life in the lower right and in the darkest passages of the background. The wealth of tonal balance and fluidity of the brushwork remain well preserved.
