The oak panel is made up two boards horizontally joined. There is no cradling to the panel. It is bevelled to the left vertical edge to the reverse. There are very minor traces of historic woodworm to the upper board of panel to the reverse. The panel remains in a good and stable state. Examination under natural light: reveals a fine pattern of craquelure across the panel with signs of paint showing tendencies to tent in a few minor areas, specifically to the left hand third of the panel and the upper right corner. Some very minor paint losses associated with the craquelure. Evidence of some scattered retouchings, most notable in the pale tones and along the cracks between the two boards. There is a historic varnish that has yellowed, predominantly to the sky. Examination in UV light: confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals some further scattered retouchings all over, including to the hem of St Jerome’s garment. The yellow varnish precludes further examination.
