FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI (PITIGLIANO 1702-1788 FLORENCE)
Wooded Landscape with a Fisherman on a Bank; and Wooded Landscape with a Pyramid
These airy, arcadian landscapes are autograph versions of the prototypes formerly in the collection of the Earls of Rosslyn. These latter are believed to have been painted during Zuccarelli’s second sojourn in England, between 1765-1771. Zuccarelli enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime and was a particular favourite of English collectors. The present landscapes are unusual for their flavour of eastern exoticism.

A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Fisherman The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. There is a tear in the canvas of 4.5 cm. diagonally through the fisherman. Examination in natural light shows some scattered retouching to the sky. There has been some slight thinning to the upper paint glazes. Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouching, which has predominently been executed to fill in the historic craquelure. There is scattered retouching to the ground and trees. The varnish precludes further examination. The paint is stable.
Pyramid: The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. Examination in natural light shows some scattered retouching to the sky. There is some minor retouching to the building, lower left. Examination under UV light confirms the aforementioned retouching. The detailing of the woman on horse back and the whites of the figures have been strengthened. The varnish precludes further examination. The paint is stable.
In both cases the deftness of brushwork and the artistry of composition remain fully appreciable.
