Lot Essay

These airy, arcadian landscapes are autograph versions of the prototypes formerly in the collection of the Earls of Rosslyn. These latter are believed to have been painted during Zuccarelli’s second sojourn in England, between 1765-1771. Zuccarelli enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime and was a particular favourite of English collectors. The present landscapes are unusual for their flavour of eastern exoticism.
