The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and is providing a stable support for the picture. There is a very slight raised buckle in the canvas in the upper left corner, visible on close inspection.
Overall the picture presents very well, with the fine integrity of the drawing and detail of the pigments and impasto well preserved. The varnish is aged and rather uneven, blanching in certain areas, such as the lower right corner.
On close inspection, and in raking light, some old retouching is visible to the Madonna’s forehead and nose, and to the Child’s forehead, the latter possibly to repair a very minor damage. There are a few small discoloured spots of retouching to the Madonna’s headdress.
The examination under UV confirms the aforementioned old retouching, with some other strengthening visible beneath the varnish. The picture would benefit from cleaning to restore clarity.
